The First Question is Not which Company
People planning a first trip out of Sag Harbor usually start by searching for a company. That is the wrong order.
Start with the shape of the day. How many hours do you want on the water? How many people are coming? Does anyone in the group hold a boating license? Those three answers narrow the options fast.
Get them wrong and you end up paying for a full day when three hours was plenty, or squeezing sixteen people onto a boat sized for eight.
Half Day or Full Day
A half day charter is the common first booking. It runs a set block of hours with crew aboard. The captain builds the route around the weather and what your group wants to do.
It suits people testing the experience. You get the water, the swim stop, the views, and you are still home for dinner.
A full day changes the pace. There is time for a meal aboard, more than one stop, and a longer route toward Shelter Island and the surrounding water. Groups celebrating something usually want this one.
One honest warning. A full day sounds great until hour six. If half your group is ready for a nap by then, the half day was the better call.
Captained or Bareboat
This is the split that trips up most first-timers.
A captained charter means a licensed captain runs the boat the whole time. Nobody in your group needs experience or credentials. You show up and enjoy the day.
A bareboat charter puts you at the wheel. It also requires proof of boating experience before you leave the dock. It is built for people who already know their way around a vessel.
Most groups want captained. Vacation is a bad time to learn.
Local operators split fairly cleanly on this. Yacht Hampton Boat Rental has run charters in Sag Harbor since 2012 and lists both setups, with USCG-licensed captains on the crewed trips. Their fleet runs roughly 16 to 62 feet, so there is usually something sized to the group.
Safety Gear is Not Optional, and It is Not Complicated
Whatever you book, there is one baseline worth knowing before you go.
Federal rules require a properly fitted, Coast Guard approved life jacket on board for every person. Children under 13 have to wear one while the boat is underway, unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin. the Coast Guard’s guidance on wearing a life jacket covers the fit and condition rules in plain language, and it takes two minutes to read.
On a crewed charter this is handled for you. On a bareboat rental it is your responsibility. Worth knowing which one you booked.
Where You Leave from Matters
Sag Harbor gets tight in July and August. Village traffic backs up near Main Street. Parking near the water fills early on weekends.
Operators working from their own dock have an easier time with this. Yacht Hampton runs out of a private marina at 9 Long Wharf, bought and renovated in 2023. The practical benefit is loading. Your group walks down and boards instead of waiting behind other charters.
Book Earlier than You Think
Weekend slots between late June and August go first. Sunset windows go before anything else.
If your date is fixed, call as far ahead as you can. If your date is flexible, ask about weekdays and shoulder season. Early May and late September are quieter on the water, and the photos are usually better.
